What Would You Say If I Told You That I’m Thankful For Boogers?

You read that right:  I’m thankful for boogers.

And now I bet you’re wondering what in the world I’m thinking.  “Has she gone off the deep end?” you’re asking yourself.  Well, yeah, kinda.  “Is this an April Fool’s Joke?”  Nope.

Let me explain:  Boogers are a miracle, the same way your heartbeat, your ability to breath, and the way a cut on your skin will eventually heal, are all miracles.

Huh?

Now that I’ve got you thoroughly confused, let me really explain: the Bible says that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”  SO true!  In my studies of the body – A&P (anatomy & physiology), med-surg, all my other nursing courses, everything – it has never ceased to amaze me how incredibly complex the human body is!

Like, did you know, if the acidity of your blood does not stay between 7.35 and 7.45 pH, there are some major issues that begin to happen, some important body functions that begin to go haywire?  True story.  And, you have the ability to correct that imbalance quickly – through breathing – or slowly – by the way your kidneys function.  Ah-maz-ing.

Did you know that, in the womb, your heart began as a long tube; around the fourth week of development, it folded over to become the four-chambered heart you would need to survive outside the womb.  A tube!  Becomes four chambers.  INCREDIBLE!!!

And then there’s those boogers.  Bet you didn’t know that they actually form because of the measures your nose has in place in order to protect your airway.  See, many boogers are the result of junk in the air that you breathe in, which becomes trapped in the tiny hairs in your nostrils instead of going into your lungs and possibly causing sickness.  In order to wash out those potential pathogens, your body produces mucus to surround them and render these tiny things harmless to your body.  The mass of the congealed junk causes a reflex to blow your nose, thereby completely removing the piece of plegh from your body.  And the other boogers – the ones we get when we have a cold or an allergy attack?  Same protective measure: the body is trying to rid itself of something that is making or might make it ill.

How awesome, how incredibly awesome, is that?!  Your body works so efficiently that it is able to remove many illness-causing organisms before they can ever make you sick!  So amazing, that we were created like this.

Another cool fact – if you don’t have enough calcium in your blood, you won’t be able to do anything.  At all.  Why?  Because it’s calcium that “opens” the doors of cells to allow nerve impulses to move from one cell to another.  Potassium and sodium (salt) are also incredibly important.  But the “never too much of a good thing” adage does not apply here – too much of any of these nutrients is equally harmful.  Our bodies are designed so incredibly, though, that they are usually able to correct imbalances quickly and easily.

I could go on and on and on – and believe me, I thought about doing that.  I can do that another time, however; for now, let me get down to the point of this post:

You – yes, you, the reader – are a miracle.  God made you just the way you are, for a reason.  King David said,

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are they works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”  Psalms 139:14

So every little part of you – your brain, your muscles, your bones and nerves, all the way down to the boogers your nose makes – God designed you that way, for a reason.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made; what an incredible way to think of boogers!
